Epic Games’ Unreal Development Kit (UDK) is one of the most popular developers of licensed game engines around. The commercial version of the Unreal engine is used in classic games such as Batman Arkham City and the Mass Effect Series; the UDK also forms the basis of numerous units on BU’s BSc and MSc courses in Games Technology.

Now our own Dr Christos Gatzidis from the School of Design, Engineering and Computing has co-authored an instructional textbook on the UDK, which he hopes will slot neatly into a gap in the computing market.

Dr Gatzidis said, “With game engines and assorted middleware being so important in contemporary games development, plus mobile gaming on devices such as the iPhone having taken off the last few years and recognised today as a very lucrative market, this book could be a very good first guide to aspiring developers looking into the technical aspects of all of the above.”

The book, titled UDK iOS Game Development Beginner’s Guide was published by Packt Publishing on 24 August 2012. It covers the fundamentals of the Unreal engine via the creation of a third-person shooter game in UDK, with a specific focus on Apple device deployment such as the iPad, the iPhone and the iPod Touch. After the game is created, the reader will learn what can be done with any project in order to optimize a UDK game for the iOS platform and discover special considerations that need to be made. Finally, the user will be shown how to publish his/her game on the App Store for the world to see and play along, with details on different costs associated with publishing.
