Festival of Design and Innovation 2012 logo Annual festival to open on Thursday 21 June.

The inventions of tomorrow will be on display at the 20th Festival of Design and Innovation (FoDI) at Bournemouth University (BU) from 21 - 25 June 2012.

This years festival is sponsored by Humphries Kirk Solicitors and showcases the designs models and prototypes created by students in the school of Design, Engineering and Computing as part of their final year project.

Exact details of what will be on show cannot be disclosed, however, The Tank Museum set a project for Design Engineering students, and popular camping brand Gelert have also set a brief for selected Product Design students.

Previous inventions to come out of the festival include the ‘quick pitch’ a festival favourite pop up tent, which is now manufactured under license by one of the UK’s top camping brands Gelert. The quick pitch sold over 40,000 units in its first year and Designer Franziska Conrad is now developing a range of tents in partnership with Gelert.

Key note speaker on the opening night is Sir George Cox, Honorary President of the Institution of Design Engineering.

Over 170 students from the School of DEC will be showcasing their designs and prototypes. The courses on display at FoDI include: Design Engineering, Computer Aided Product Design, Media Technology, Music and Audio Technology, Product Design, Industrial Design, sustainable graphics and Packaging and Games Technology.

Tania Humphries Smith, Associate Dean of The School of Design, Engineering and Computing said: “FoDI is a great opportunity for our students to publicly exhibit their design work, and allows them to demonstrate their design and engineering skills to a wide audience, including those school pupils considering a future in design and potential employers.

“Employers regularly feedback how impressed they are by both the creativity demonstrated by our students but also the extent of their understanding of manufacturing and costing of their designs. Student regularly gain employment as a direct and indirect result of taking part in FoDI.”
