The Psychology Research Centre in Bournemouth University’s School of Design, Engineering & Computing is seeking to add to its thriving Psychology doctoral research group by recruiting quality individuals onto two fully-funded PhD studentships for up to 3 years in duration.
Making decisions about website and interface appeal and quality
Previously it was important that websites or interfaces should be easy to use effectively but now the emphasis is on how to make interfaces as appealing as possible to consumers. The aim of the research in this studentship is to find out more about how individuals make decisions about interface appeal both consciously and unconsciously and to develop a theory-driven explanation regarding the time course of such decision making. Having a background in both psychology and computing/human-computer interaction would be an advantage.

Exploring attention difficulties in individuals with ADHD
The aim of this project is to explore the cognitive difficulties experienced by people with ADHD with a view to explaining lapses in attention and providing easier and more accurate diagnosis. This studentship will examine why lapses in attention occur and why individuals fail to maintain their attention with respect to their intended goals. The research will involve eye-tracking and computer-based testing to investigate failures in sustained attention.

Funding
The studentships are available for up to three years full-time and will cover fees and a stipend (£14,200 per annum). Students will be expected to contribute to the teaching of the department in return for this stipend although this will be strictly limited to ensure successful completion of the doctorate within 3 years.
Criteria
Applicants are expected to have a minimum of a 2:1 classification in their first degree in psychology (or equivalent for applicants outside the UK). A relevant Masters qualification is also desirable. Applicants should have the ability to work independently and have the high degree of motivation required to finish the doctorate in 3 years. Those without a first degree in psychology are not eligible for these studentships.
