International conference on Tourism, Climate Change and Sustainability 2012

The International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research (ICTHR), Bournemouth University, is pleased to announce this important conference with an aim to debate the broader conceptual ideas and contested relationships between climate change, sustainability and tourism as well as to examine worldwide responses and exchange cutting-edge research.

  • This conference will feature keynotes from high-level policy makers from international agencies including UNWTO, UNESCO, UNEP, European Commission and leading research institutions.
  • This tourism conference is expected to be crucial for researchers interested in Green Economy and Sustainability aspects as it will follow the Rio+20 UN Summit.

Developing a Citizen Brand Ambassador Programme - Key Issues for Place Branding Strategy

During this workshop participants will be tasked to devise solutions to the key challenges in the development of citizen brand ambassador programmes.

Workshop facilitator Keith Dinnie, of NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences and Director of the Centre for City Branding, will present findings from his research into this topic to stimulate debate and group activities.

The workshop is highly participative and interactive, so rather than follow a traditional lecture fashion, key issues will be identified and participants will then be assigned specific tasks to work on in groups before reporting back to the other workshop participants.

A free-thinking, collaborative atmosphere will be created in order to maximise the possibilities for mutual learning between workshop participants.

An Audience with Fiona Jeffery

Tourism expert Fiona Jeffery, who is chair of annual trade exhibition the World Travel Market, will provide a unique insight into her career on Wednesday 14 March, in a public lecture at BU.

Fiona, who was appointed OBE in the New Year Honours list for services to the tourism industry, will be reflecting on her career in the travel and tourism industry, as well as answering questions from students, staff and guests on topics ranging from tourism, marketing, retail, events and hospitality.

She will also be taking part in a discussion about trends in tourism with academics from the School of Tourism.

In 1998 Fiona founded and is now Chairman of the international water-aid charity Just a Drop which the eTourism Lab of BU has been supporting with a social media strategy. The charity aims to deliver clean water to over 1.1 billion people worldwide who have no access near to their homes and by doing so reduce the instance of child death caused by polluted water across the world.

In her role at the World Travel Market, Fiona has created two key initiatives in association with United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), launching the Ministers Summit and World Responsible Tourism Day which take place each year at the international event.

Fiona is a trustee of the charity The Travel Foundation, a Board Member of Tourism Society, received the Shine Woman of the Year Award in 2008 and was nominated for the TTG Outstanding Achievement Award in 2011.

The free lecture will be at the University’s Talbot Campus on Wednesday 14 March at 4pm, with registration from 3pm.

Careers Forum

This is an exciting and unique event happening at BU. The School of Tourism will be hosting a Careers Forum, including key note speakers, workshops and a Careers Fair focused on the Hospitality and Events industries. The event has been organised by current level I Events students as part of their degree. They have done a great job in putting together a great programme for the day and have benefited immensely from engaging with industry in a highly professional manner.

Key note speaker representing the Hospitality industry is Michel Roux Jr: notable for his recent hosting of ‘Masterchef The Professionals’ and ‘Service’ on BBC television but he is also a two-star Michelin Chef at the London restaurant, Le Gavroche. The keynote speaker representing the Events industry is Louise Kiwanuka.

Further details will be available soon through regular updates and marketing campaigns. Please bear in mind that spaces will be limited as there will be invitations to external organisations and educational establishments as well, so please book when available.

Places are free, and open to all staff and current BU students and will take place in room KG01on Talbot Campus, 10:00 - 11:30 am on 14 March. Please arrive by 09:45am.

Kris Gumbrell, CEO at Convivial London Pubs and Bournemouth graduate from 1988 will deliver an informative and insightful presentation on running a small business.

Kris is a typical entrepreneur, balancing his role at Convivial with being a Non Executive Director at Country Food & Dining and Managing Director at Eclipse Business & Management Services Ltd. He was Operations Director at Greene King Plc from 1999-2007 and was previously Retail Development Manager at Scottish & Newcastle from 1996-1999.

Kris is clearly a very driven and successful entrepreneur who has employed BU placement students for a number of years and has taken some on as graduates in a range of different roles.

This presentation will give an insight into the great work being undertaken at BU by Prof Dimitrios Buhalis and the PhD team.

The scope and range of their research, which many students would have used in their own research for assignments, is cutting edge and entails new developments in Social Media.

A session that shouldn’t be missed and will certainly be helpful for the remainder of any Tourism student’s degree.

Created by celebrated chef Raymond Blanc, Le Manoir has been delighting guests since 1984. A year later it was awarded two Michelin stars, which it has now held for a remarkable 28 years.

Guest Lecture - Greg Paterson

Greg is the General manager at The Beach Club, Florida and is a charismatic character who is sure to inspire students with his talk, as the video he made prior to his talk demonstrates.

This week’s guest lecture will be delivered by Hilton Hotels represented by Guy Hilton, General Manager, Hilton Brighton Metropole and veronica Burman, HR Officer, Hilton London Gatwick Airport.

Guy will give an insight into how to develop your career with a large brand like Hilton, the challenges this presents and the opportunities after graduation. Veronica manages all Hilton internships across the UK and did her placement with Hilton in Holland.

Tourism experts at Bournemouth University have organised another BU Tourism Futures Forum at the World Travel Market 2011. The forum will facilitate debate about key strategic changes in the tourism sector and the successful response of the industry. The forum will take place on Thursday 10 November 2011 at the ExCeL in London.

The global challenges and opportunities for both tourism destinations and suppliers around the world require innovation in management and operations, calling for a major rethinking of both strategic and tactical Tourism Management. The Tourism Futures Forum will provide an insight into the future dimensions of the tourism industry. It examines major trends in tourism demand and supply and explores the strategic changes that lead to the international tourism industry restructuring.

Tourism for the Games conference

BU is hosting a conference on Thursday 22 September to highlight the activity taking place across the region to support the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games. Guest speakers will include John Tweed, CEO of Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Amy Crees, 2012 Games Project Manager for VisitBritain, and academics from BU’s Centre for Event & Sport Research.

The event is organised in partnership with Business Link South West and RELAYS (the Regional Educational Legacy in Arts and Youth Sport). RELAYS, which is ran in partnership with Universities South West, aims to inspire young people and communities to participate in sports and cultural activities to create a legacy beyond 2012.

Briefings at the conference will include:

  • Sailing venue preparations
  • Dorset preparations for London 2012
  • Leveraging the tourism benefits of the 2012 Games
  • Get set for 2012, an update from VisitEngland
  • Games Readiness, helping business prepare for the challenge

She is a Special Advisor to the British Interactive Media Association and Advisor to the Speaker of the House of Commons.

Context Based Services in Tourism Workshop

On Thursday 7 and Friday 8 July Bournemouth University will be host to the Context Based Services in Tourism workshop. The event is being co-organised by the International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research and CICtourGUNE, the Cooperative Research Centre in Tourism, Spain.

Context based services are applications that adapt themselves to a given situation or context. This mobile environment/context may include a range or combination of concepts, such as location, time and identity of user, and matches the mobile user's preferences with services at the visited location, and provides these services in personalized and adaptive manner.

This workshop is designed to facilitate the sharing of ideas on all aspects of the topic and to encourage/facilitate innovative and in-depth analysis with a view to downstream practical applications and outcomes. It is part of on-going series of events organised by the Journal of Information Technology for Travel and Tourism (JITT) focusing on various aspects of information technology within the context of tourism.
