BU Talent: Engaging with Employers in London

Bournemouth University's School of Tourism has an enviable track record of developing talented graduates for employment in the events, hospitality, leisure, retail, sports and tourism sectors both in the UK and overseas. Guest Lecture - Greg Paterson

The School of Tourism welcomes Greg Paterson to the university, who will deliver a guest lecture to staff and students.

Greg is the General manager at The Beach Club, Florida and is a charismatic character who is sure to inspire students with his talk, as the video he made prior to his talk demonstrates.

Greg’s guest lecture is taking place in the Lees Lecture Theatre and starts at 12pm. All students and staff are very welcome to attend.

Guest Lecture - Hilton Hotels

This week’s guest lecture will be delivered by Hilton Hotels represented by Guy Hilton, General Manager, Hilton Brighton Metropole and veronica Burman, HR Officer, Hilton London Gatwick Airport.

Guy will give an insight into how to develop your career with a large brand like Hilton, the challenges this presents and the opportunities after graduation. Veronica manages all Hilton internships across the UK and did her placement with Hilton in Holland.

The Hilton Group offers global opportunities through their extensive network of hotels and their Elevator scheme is well recognised within the industry. More information about this can be seen on the Hilton website.

This guest lecture is taking place in the Barnes Lecture Theatre and is running from 3 - 4pm. All staff are very welcome to attend.

BU Tourism Futures Forum

Tourism experts at Bournemouth University have organised another BU Tourism Futures Forum at the World Travel Market 2011. The forum will facilitate debate about key strategic changes in the tourism sector and the successful response of the industry. The forum will take place on Thursday 10 November 2011 at the ExCeL in London.

The global challenges and opportunities for both tourism destinations and suppliers around the world require innovation in management and operations, calling for a major rethinking of both strategic and tactical Tourism Management. The Tourism Futures Forum will provide an insight into the future dimensions of the tourism industry. It examines major trends in tourism demand and supply and explores the strategic changes that lead to the international tourism industry restructuring.

Tourism for the Games conference

BU is hosting a conference on Thursday 22 September to highlight the activity taking place across the region to support the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games. Guest speakers will include John Tweed, CEO of Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Amy Crees, 2012 Games Project Manager for VisitBritain, and academics from BU’s Centre for Event & Sport Research.

The event is organised in partnership with Business Link South West and RELAYS (the Regional Educational Legacy in Arts and Youth Sport). RELAYS, which is ran in partnership with Universities South West, aims to inspire young people and communities to participate in sports and cultural activities to create a legacy beyond 2012.

Briefings at the conference will include:

  • Sailing venue preparations
  • Dorset preparations for London 2012
  • Leveraging the tourism benefits of the 2012 Games
  • Get set for 2012, an update from VisitEngland
  • Games Readiness, helping business prepare for the challenge
  • 2012 and Beyond: Developing Future Research and Partnership Opportunities for Olympic Tourism and Events

The free event is open to all and runs from 9.15am to 2pm, and includes a networking lunch.

Digital Economy - Challenges and Opportunities

The Digital Hub from Bournemouth University is organising an informative and interactive Digital Day with guest speaker Tiffany St James, hosted at Kimmeridge House, Talbot Campus, Bournemouth University.

Bournemouth University has developed a bank of research-led expertise in the Creative and Digital Economy and this event brings that expertise together to help you better understand the opportunities and challenges, what the Digital Hub can do for you and your organization and to allow us to better understand your needs. Themes on the day will include:

Tiffany St James, Digital Strategist and former head of social media for the UK Government, will illustrate how critical it is for every business to harness digital challenges. Tiffany is currently retained by Microsoft, The Guardian, Channel 4 and built the world's first social media laboratory as a managed service for Euro RSCG London, one of the UK's top integrated advertising agencies. She is a Special Advisor to the British Interactive Media Association and Advisor to the Speaker of the House of Commons.

Context Based Services in Tourism Workshop

On Thursday 7 and Friday 8 July Bournemouth University will be host to the Context Based Services in Tourism workshop. The event is being co-organised by the International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research and CICtourGUNE, the Cooperative Research Centre in Tourism, Spain.

Context based services are applications that adapt themselves to a given situation or context. This mobile environment/context may include a range or combination of concepts, such as location, time and identity of user, and matches the mobile user's preferences with services at the visited location, and provides these services in personalized and adaptive manner.

This workshop is designed to facilitate the sharing of ideas on all aspects of the topic and to encourage/facilitate innovative and in-depth analysis with a view to downstream practical applications and outcomes. It is part of on-going series of events organised by the Journal of Information Technology for Travel and Tourism (JITT) focusing on various aspects of information technology within the context of tourism.
