Charles Parker Day 2006 Hosted by The Media School |
The Centre for Broadcasting History Research, based at The Media School, is delighted to celebrate Charles Parker, famous for his radio features the 'Radio Ballads'.
The radio features conference, in honour of the Bournemouth born radio producer, has truly become an annual event in the wider radio conference calendar, the third time running.
The day is not only about Charles Parker, although he re-invented radio features in the 1950's with the arrival of the first portable audio recording equipment the 'EMI midget tape recorder', rather a little heavier than the Mini-disk now used by students and professionals in radio.
Professor Sean Street, Director of the Centre for Broadcasting History Research and the driving force behind creating the day is ready to welcome a wide range of speakers from people who have worked with Charles Parker to academics writing about him and producers of radical new work.
"The day intends to celebrate radio features, although there is an element of nostalgia, it looks not only at the past but also at the present and future."
It is probably thanks to Charles Parker that students on the MA Radio Production course can now draw on Prof Street's 32 years experience in radio production. "I came into radio because I listened to Charles Parker's programmes. He revolutionised the way radio was produced from mere scripting to hearing the voices of the people mixed with music."
As their course leader he encourages students to enter the Charles Parker Award competition for original radio features. "We don't expect students to produce ballads but are looking for new talent much needed in the radio industry in today's world of pod-casting."
The winner of the prize, £500 and two weeks work placement with the BBC Radio Documentaries Unit, will be announced at the end of the day.
