BU nutrition and public health expert receives Associate Professorship |
BU’s Dr Heather Hartwell has been appointed Associate Professor following her pioneering professional practice work in nutrition and public health.
As a leading nutritionist, Dr Hartwell, who divides her time between the Schools of Services Management and Health & Social Care, has played an important role in developing the profession throughout the UK.
This has led her to be involved in a wide range of professional practice activity including: sitting on the UK committee that evaluates and registers new nutritionists; being Chief External Examiner of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health; a Trustee of the Royal Society for Public Health and acting as Honorary Editor of their peer-reviewed journal Perspectives in Public Health.
Dr Hartwell joined BU in 1991, a time that saw the emergence of a new area focusing on the relationship between nutrition and foodservice. A pioneer in this area she has carried out numerous work-based studies into foodservice on behalf of public sector organisations such as prisons and hospitals, as well as research into food branding and menu descriptions.
More recently, Dr Hartwell has been involved in the PHORUS (Public Health Open Resources in the University Sector) project – an initiative designed to test practical considerations and benefits of providing open educational Resources (OER) in Higher Education.
Working in partnership with The Royal Society for Public Health and the Higher Education Health Sciences Subject Centre, Dr Hartwell investigated the barriers and enablers of free online Public Health education.
Commenting on her new appointment Dr Hartwell said: “I am incredibly proud of my Associate Professorship appointment and my professional practice work that it recognises. I hope that my fellow colleagues will notice that Associate Professorships can be achieved via activity other than research and will be inspired to pursue this prestigious position.”
