Students and staff bring in The Year of the Snake with performances and a traditional Chinese lion dance |
The Year of the Snake started off with a bang at a celebration event organised by BU's Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA).
The Mayors of Bournemouth and Poole and BU's Vice-Chancellor Professor John Vinney were among the guests at the Chinese New Year celebration event, which took place in Talbot House on Friday evening.
Alongside performances - including live music and a Chinese choir made up of staff from the University - there was a traditional lion dance.
There were also refreshments, a lottery, and games - including a chopstick challenge where guests competing to transfer the most sweets from one bowl to another using chopsticks.
Min Jiang, President of the CSSA at Bournemouth University, said: "Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. The whole family gather together to celebrate the festival.
"However, we, the Chinese international students, do not have time to go back to China and spend the time with our family.
"The BU Chinese New Year party was excellent - the Student Hall was packed with Chinese and English of all generations.
"We received a lot of positive feedback about the event. A lot of guests said they enjoyed the party and were looking forward to the next year's Chinese New Year Party."
