26 November 2012

Academics from Bournemouth University will share their ideas and research on renewable energy and climate change at a carbon-reduction event organised by GovToday.

Carbon Reduction 2012: Delivering the Low Carbon Future, takes place at The Brewery Conference Centre in London on Tuesday 27 November and attendees will include representatives from relevant government departments, agencies and other public sector organisations.

Bournemouth University has been named as educational partner for the event, which will have more than 300 delegates, and a number of academics from across BU will present their ideas and research in front of key decision-makers.

Among those presenting will be Dr Zulfiqar Khan, Director of the Sustainable Design Research Centre in BU's School of Design, Engineering and Computing.

Dr Khan, whose previous research has included the potential of harnessing tidal power in Poole Harbour as a renewable energy source, said: "We want to try and get the message across that we are very much part of the green agenda in terms of renewable energy and renewable technology.

Among those presenting will be Dr Zulfiqar Khan, Director of the Sustainable Design Research Centre in BU's School of Design, Engineering and Computing.

"Bournemouth University is a strong player in the game and we want to showcase the projects we have, and our expertise and facilities.

"It is also a great opportunity to network and introduce stakeholders to BU so that they know they can come to us and we can try to set up some collaborative projects."

Other BU academics presenting at the event are Professor Mark Hadfield, deputy dean for Research, Enterprise and Internationalisation in the School of Design, Engineering and Computing, and Dr Elena Cantarello, from BU's Centre for Conservation Ecology & Environmental Change, who will be talking about the green economy.

The final BU presenter will be Sukanya Ayatakshi, Lecturer in Entrepreneurship in the Business School, who has recently completed a PhD into the effects of environmental taxation.

She will be talking about the impact that it can have on small and medium-sized businesses and enterprises (SMEs).

She said: "Most environmental policies, such as environmental taxation, are designed for larger businesses and then thrust upon smaller ones without taking into consideration their unique circumstances.

"It is very important to include SMEs in the wider discussion of policy making to ensure greater success of policies such an environmental taxation"

The Delivering the Low Carbon Future event will also provide analysis of the UK's overall progress on the low carbon agenda and the government strategy for achieving emissions reduction targets.

Dr Khan said: "It is a prestigious event with lots of high level people, which will be shaping the government's strategic plan.

"This is an important area, and they need to provide financial and other support and increase awareness."
