On 8 July over 160 school year 11 and 12 pupils descended on BU for a sample of student life. |
Aimed at students who come from under–represented groups in the sector, the summer schools ran from Sunday 8 July to Sunday 15 July, with Year 11 pupils attending between 8 – 11 July and Year 12 between 12–15 July 2012.
The summer schools are four day, three night residentials, with the pupils staying in BU halls of residence. Students were able to experience university teaching from a chosen topic from across the six academic schools and also received a different master–class each day about the different areas of the application process including, fees and funding, careers and applying to university.
The Year 12 students had an additional project, working with Young Enterprise. The project involved teams of students working with each other and gaining information from the academic staff they met over the four days to come up with a project and present their ideas in a dragons den style pitch at the end of their stay at BU.
Set up by Aimhigher with BU, an outreach programme run by Bournemouth University which evolved from the late Aimhigher programme funded by HEFCE, the summer schools aim to provide prospective students with a real feel of what university life is like.
Matthew Usher, Outreach Officer (Mentoring & Summer Schools) at BU said: “Summer schools are a great opportunity for students to experience university life and understand the course, accommodation and learning and teaching style, but also to dispel the myths about fees and funding. Residential summer schools represent a significant investment in outreach by BU, and fit in a wider programme of outreach activities such as Campus Visits, Mentoring which students may have engaged in throughout their educational journey.”
Social activities are also provided in the evening for the students so they experience all aspects of university life.
Industry professionals from local companies, including JP Morgan and Shore Financial Planning judged the Young Enterprise projects and provided feedback to the students on their ideas.
