BU at the Oscars

BU hothouse for Oscar talent.

Over 70 Bournemouth University alumni worked on four out of the five films nominated in the category for best visual effects at this year’s Oscars.

BU graduates worked on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: part two, Hugo, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon, with Hugo winning on the night in the Visual Effects category on the night. Hugo also won Oscars for Cinematography, Art Direction, Sound Editing and Sound mixing.

Stephen Jukes, Dean of the Media School said: “We are immensely proud of our graduates and their outstanding track record of success at the Oscars.

Our staff and students are steeped in the industry and we have built up a formidable reputation for delivering the skills the market needs. It is extremely satisfying to see that pay off for our graduates in the jobs market and to see them go on to win major awards such as the Oscars.”

Our alumni also worked on Rango, the winner of the award for Best Animated Feature Film and Kung Fu Panda 2, which was nominated in the same category.

Sofronis Efstathiou, Senior Practise Fellow at the National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) at BU said “For the past five or six years most productions that go off to win the Oscar have had Bournemouth alumni involved in some way. It is really satisfying for us, and every year we always get really excited.”
