Students speaking to an employer from Tesco Specialised Marketing and Communications careers fair held at BU’s Kimmeridge House.

BU held a specialised marketing and communications careers fair in Kimmeridge House on Wednesday, giving talks from leading industry recruiters on graduate schemes and interview tips.

Industry professionals such as Glaxosmithkline, Wunderman, Vodaphone and Tesco to name a few, were the employers who were desperate to hire BU’s communication graduates.

One of the most sought after types of graduates and placement students seemed to be from BU’s BA Hons Public Relations course.

Based on their experience of taking on Jasmin Dent, a BA Hons PR placement student, Glaxosmithkline have decided to develop for the first time ever a communications graduate scheme.

Jasmin said “we have a human resources department that are eager to look at talent development within the organisation and BU has been known to produce very accomplished communications students. We have only just launched our comms graduate programme, so it will be the first year we have hired in that sector, and BU is considered as a uni they would consult with.”

The day was widely attended by students from The Media School looking to sharpen their skills and find employment for their placement years or after graduating.

Twins Alice and Heidi Bland, both in their final year of BA Hons Public Relations, found the event extremely useful in understanding the best way to apply to graduate roles.

Alice said, “I decided to come to the careers fair today as I heard this one was more PR and communications based and I was really interested in Octopus group to see what they are doing, and you never know who you might meet or what information they will give.”

Heidi continued, “companies told us exactly how to apply, who’s recruiting, what roles are on offer, where to apply, and specifically what email addresses to send your application to.”

Alice finished, “sometimes when you are at home by yourself it can be confusing whether companies want an online application or just a CV, or how they would most like to receive your application, so it really helped us understand how to apply to different companies.”

Vicky Hewlett Senior PR Manager at Pure, the world leading radio manufacturer, outlined why she had come back to BU for more:

“I have had experience of hiring a Bournemouth graduate. I used to work at Bosch and took on a placement student there so I have been a real champion of bringing in fresh new talent and bringing them up and getting them excited about where their career is going and perhaps hiring them in the future. The PR course at Bournemouth has a really good reputation, and our current placement student has been fantastic so we are looking to take on another one.”
