The Bournemouth University first team has finished as runners-up in a national Golf championship.

For the second year in succession, the Bournemouth University first team has finished as runners-up in the national British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Golf Matchplay Championship.

BU’s opponents from the University of Stirling retained the Wallace Crimson Cup for the third year running with an excellent display of matchplay singles as they won the final 6.5 to 2.5 at the Ganton Golf Club in Yorkshire.

Bournemouth had set up a repeat of last year’s final after an epic semi final against St Andrew’s which was decided after a play-off. Excellent performances from Kerry-Anne Haskell and Rudy Herrick helped to draw the teams level at 4.5 points apiece before BU’s James Billingham secured the victory on the first extra hole.

Unfortunately, BU wasn’t able to repeat the same heroics in the final as Stirling played some outstanding golf. The Bournemouth 1sts claimed the BUCS Premier South title once again this season after winning eight of their ten matches, with one loss and a draw.

The Bournemouth 2nds also claimed silver medals in Yorkshire after losing to Loughborough 2nds 8-1 in the BUCS Golf Trophy, played at Ganton. The 2nds enjoyed an undefeated season, finishing top of the BUCS Western Conference 1A table with eight wins and two draws.
