A fish tale, world preservation & you

Professor Rudy Gozlan

Professor Rudy Gozlan’s lecture on 18 May 2011.

In the last 20 years Professor Rudy Gozlan has travelled across the globe, witnessing declining aqueous ecosystems and searching for scientific answers.

“Water - source of all life on earth - will be the major battle of the 21st century,” he said. “It’s a battle which should not oppose our economic prospects of the possibility of a sustainable future.”

For millions of people fish and rivers are at the centre of this battle as they provide a vital source of food and clean water.

In his inaugural lecture Professor Gozlan will examine how, with the world’s human population expected to rise to 9.5 billion by 2050, we can sustain our development and avoid major crises.

He continued: “In this lecture I will bring you into a world where fish are behaving badly, where ecological solutions for a sustainable future are not necessarily where we expect them to be and where ignorance is no longer an excuse, so we can all look at our children and tell them what we did for the preservation of this wonderful world – our world, planet earth.”

Professor Gozlan is head of the academic group for Conservation Ecology and Environmental Sciences in the School of Applied Sciences at Bournemouth University and his insightful, topical lecture will undoubtedly prove invaluable for ecologists, students, fellow academic staff and environmental enthusiasts.

He added: “In this century, conservation ecology will not remain a vague philosophical debate, a scientific hobby or an emotional relation to our environment. Nor will it remain a political token. In the next few decades conservation ecology will become a matter of national security…your security.”

Professor Gozlan’s lecture will take place on Wednesday 18 May 2011 at the Executive Business Centre, Lansdowne Campus, 89 Holdenhurst Road, Bournemouth BH8 8EB at 5pm.

Registration takes place at 5pm and refreshments will be provided.
