Current Air Travel Disruption – 22 April, 2010

22 April 2010

Aeroplane

The following news item is relevant to all staff and students, particularly those who are experiencing difficulty due to the current travel situation.

The University is aware that some staff and students are currently overseas and unable to return to the UK due to the air travel restrictions. We would like to assure you that the University will not penalise students who are unable to attend the start of term or meet coursework deadlines because of these exceptional circumstances.

The following advice is provided for students:

Submission of assignments and course work
If you have coursework due in, where possible this should be submitted electronically by the due date to your Programme Administrator.

Where it is not possible to submit work electronically, you will be granted an extension equivalent to the length of your delay in returning; however you will need to submit a mitigating circumstances form, together with proof of your return date (e.g. flight tickets) at the time of submitting your assignment.

Submission of dissertations
Please follow the guidance as for submission of coursework (above). If submitting dissertations electronically please provide only the main body of your dissertation (i.e. without appendices). On your return to the University, you should follow the instructions given to you previously by your school regarding number of copies, CD's etc required at submission.

Exams
Any student who has exams scheduled within the next 7 days and is currently overseas should notify their Programme Administrator as soon as possible.

Return of coursework already submitted
Please be aware that in some cases it may not be possible to mark and return all coursework within the published timescales because of staff availability. The University will endeavour to get all work marked and returned as soon as is reasonably practical.

Timetabled activities
It is hoped that most activities timetabled for the start of term on 26 April will take place as normal but there is a possibility of minor disruption. Any cancellations or postponement will be notified to you in the same way as normal

Accommodation and support whilst on university business
We have been advised by our insurers that the period of cover for students on overseas BU arranged exchanges will be extended until the student’s return to the UK
