Actor Martin Clunes, star of ITV’s Doc Martin, has been awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Arts at our graduation ceremonies.
An actor of national renown who achieved a huge following for his role as Gary in 'Men Behaving Badly,' his many other successes include 'Goodbye Mr Chips' and the lead role in 'Doc Martin,' which has attracted a number of awards and nominations, including Best TV Comedy Drama in the British Comedy Awards 2004.
In 2006, Dr. Clunes was nominated as Best Male Actor in the Royal Television Society’s Awards.
His film credits include Oscar-nominated 'Shakespeare in Love,' and he made his directing debut in 1994 with the feature film 'Staggered'. His work as a director brought him one of the most memorable and revealing experiences of his career thus far.
Martin is passionate about helping to make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged. Now living in West Dorset, he's an ambassador for several charities in his adopted county, including the Prince’s Trust in Bournemouth, Julia’s House – the first children's hospice in Dorset and the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.
With a love of animals and nature, he is a committed supporter of the Born Free Foundation.
Speaking at the prestigious occasion at the Bournemouth International Centre, Dr. Clunes said: "I’m now a Doctor - it hasn’t sunk in yet! I’m very flattered to receive any award, especially one from a university in Dorset, my new home.
"I was also inspired by seeing the other graduates, who all gave me such a warm welcome."
