Surridge Sport has donated over £1,500 worth of school sports equipment and team kits to the BU Kenya Sports Development Expedition (SDX) team. |
Based in Burnley, Lancashire, Surridge is BU’s new sport and recreation clothing and merchandise provider.
Mel Wheeler, Surridge Sales Manager, says the company is delighted to support such a worthy cause.
“We are very happy to be associated with an expedition of this nature and are keen to support the students who are undertaking valuable sports coaching and project work abroad in an under developed country,” Wheeler said.
A group of 12 specially-selected students comprise the SDX team. They leave for Kenya in August and are now busy raising money for their expedition with support from the University with a potential programme of sports celebrity evening lectures.
Working in conjunction with Camps International, the SDX team will travel to the Mukurumuji Camp in Kenya’s Shimba Hills National Reserve.
Once there, the students will be split amongst local schools, coaching and teaching children, as well as building and improving sports facilities in the region.
The month-long project will culminate with an inter-school football festival with student-coached and trained teams competing against each other.
“This is a truly unique opportunity for students to experience grass roots sports development in a country from the developing world,” said SDX Team Leader Barry Squires, BU’s Sports Development Manager.
“The trip is all about sharing and enhancing the lives of others less fortunate whilst using sport as a vehicle for making this happen.”
