BU golfer Richard Raye led from the front during the BUSA Western Regional Strokeplay event in Devon. |
Raye’s total of 143 over the East and West Courses of the Saunton Golf Club earned him a share of the overall lead for the two-day event which was hosted by BU.
Andrew Berryman from Royal Holloway equalled Richard’s total as the two outpaced the field.
England Boy’s International Ian Winstanley of Leeds University was set to run away with the event after carding a two under par 69 on day one.
But Raye, with a one over par 72, joined a host of others to stay in contention.
Winstanley was expected to continue his good fortune on day two but as he slipped down the leader board, some impressive golf pushed Raye and Berryman to the forefront.
Raye, who has just joined Saunton Golf Club, proved particularly popular with the local galleries as he rose to the challenge. |
One remaining event in Northumberland will complete the regional strokeplay qualifying rounds from which 26 players from England and Wales will emerge to join their Scottish and Irish counterparts in the Individual Finals at Slaley Hall near Newcastle-on-Tyne in June.
Both Raye and Kevin Garwood from BU have already qualified for the finals.
Both, however, will miss the Northumberland event in order to play for the English Universities Team in a representative match versus the Midlands Counties.
