Graduation a Family Affair for Mother and Daughter

Lynn and Laura Meaden For Lynn and Laura Meaden, graduating from Bournemouth University proved to be something of a family affair.

The mother-daughter duo from Stoborough, near Wareham, strolled across the Award Ceremony platform last week within seconds of each other to shake hands with Bournemouth Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Curran in celebration of their degrees from the University's Business School.
Both ladies completed the Bachelor of Arts in Business and Management, part-time, with mother Lynn achieving a 2:1 with honours and daughter Laura receiving her BA with distinction.

“We spotted the Bournemouth University advert for a part-time course in Business and Management and my daughter wanted to find out more,” Lynn recalls. “I volunteered to drive her over to the University for the introductory evening. When we arrived, I was invited to sit in the lecture room with my daughter having no intention at that point of joining myself. However, throughout the evening, I became more interested in taking the course.

“Laura decided to go ahead and I asked if she would mind if I took the course as well!” she continues. “Thankfully, Laura was delighted. I can't believe that was 2001 – how the time has flown.”

Nearly five years on, and countless evening and weekend sessions later, Lynn describes her and Laura's achievement of completing the programme together as “thrilling”.

“I have to confess, it has been extremely hard to work full-time and then leave the office at 5.00pm, drive to Bournemouth then sit in lectures until 9.00pm twice a week for four years,” says Lynn who works as a Senior Housing Needs Officer for the Purbeck Housing Trust in Wareham . “Laura and I became very competitive when assignment or exam results were due – analysing who had achieved the better results so we could gloat. We also both enjoyed the residential weekend in a haunted hotel on the Isle of Wight – that was such good fun and we got to know the other students quite well through the team building exercises.”

The BA (Hons) in Business & Management has run at Bournemouth University for nearly 20 years and offers a part-time route in covering a range of business-related subjects covering areas such as Management & Finance, Marketing & Human Resource Management, Strategy and Project Management with opportunities for work-based learning.
