The Volleyball England Beach Tour finals are being held on Boscombe Beach from 25 - 26 August. |
The Beach Volleyball competition at Horse Guard’s Parade took the country by storm during the London 2012 Olympic Games. Now the best of British beach volleyball players will descend on Boscombe Beach in Bournemouth this Bank Holiday weekend, 25 - 26 August, for the finals of the Volleyball England Beach Tour (VEBT) which is being hosted by sportBU, Bournemouth University and Bournemouth Council.
The VEBT Finals will give you the chance to watch top class volleyball players battle it out to become the National Beach Volleyball Champions of 2012. The Tour has already visited several seaside resorts nationwide including Margate, Great Yarmouth, Skegness and Weston-Super-Mare, and now these two action-packed, adrenaline-fuelled days in Bournemouth will bring the 2012 VEBT to an end.
A free grand stand will be available for spectators to watch the action or on the big screen TV on the promenade and if you’re feeling inspired to get involved, Volleyball England’s ‘Go Spike’ come-and-try beach courts will be available to practice your skills for free!
“We’re thrilled to be hosting the VEBT Tour here again on Boscombe beach and look forward to a thrilling finals weekend, particularly as we have some BU students being represented in both the men's and women’s draws” says Barry Squires, Acting Assistant head of sportBU, Bournemouth University.
He adds “It gives a great opportunity for local residents and visitors to witness elite, world-class volleyball players in action right on their doorstep and we hope the excitement of an adrenaline-fuelled final will entice more people to have a go for themselves here on the beach.”
Lisa Wainwright, Chief Executive of Volleyball England, says: “We are committed to raising the profile of volleyball via events such as the Beach Tour and we are hoping that the VEBT Finals will encourage more local people to play, watch and get involved in the sport.
“Since the start of the London 2012 Games we have seen an 850 per cent increase in traffic to the Go Spike website and have received 20 times more emails from people wanting to try out volleyball for themselves. Volleyball is great for boosting fitness levels, developing skills, tactics and generally having fun being active.”
As a sport, volleyball and beach volleyball featured at the London 2012 Games, while sitting volleyball, will form part of this month’s Paralympic Games.
