Global conference to make PR History

BU's Dr Tom Watson BU will host The First International History of Public Relations Conference this summer.

Delegates from around the world will visit BU’s impressive new Executive Business Centre on 8-9 July 2010 for The First International History of Public Relations Conference.

Some 36 papers have now been selected for presentation during the Conference representing authors or teams of authors from 14 countries.

“The response to the conference has been wonderfully positive and it has attracted a wide range of papers from around the world,” said conference chair, Dr Tom Watson, Deputy Dean of BU’s renowned Media School.

“We have well-established historians and early stage researchers, as well as practitioners. It shows that historical research into public relations is a very healthy youngster with plenty of potential for growth.”

Topics exploring a diverse range of PR-related themes will be featured during the conference including a history of Republican paramilitary public relations in Northern Ireland through to PR icons such as Edward Bernays, Arthur Page and John Hill to national histories of PR in Hungary and Kosovo.

A selection of these will be published in a special ‘History of Public Relations’ issue of the Journal of Communication Management later in the year.

Keynote speakers for the Conference are Dr Karen Russell from the University of Georgia in the US and Dr Jacquie L’Etang from the University of Stirling in Scotland.

Other confirmed speakers amongst PR historians, practitioners and theorists include Robert Heath, University of Houston; Vincent Hazleton, Radford College; Donald Wright, Boston University and Gunter Bentele, Leipzig University.
