A new exhibition opens in the Atrium Gallery this week. |
‘Drawings’, an exhibition by Julia Polonski, will be on display in BU’s Atrium Gallery from Thursday 8 October to Thursday 24 December 2009.
The drawings are a project of identification and searching, using residue (of medium and imagery) to animate and evoke potential narratives of the body.
Polonski's interest in the relationship between the body and cloth, and the possible narrative of worn cloth, has led to a concern with pattern and disrupted patterning
Polonski explains: “I am looking at the idea of the body ‘holding’ a space, something that I term a ‘spatial identity’.
“One drawn space leads me to re-enter it with another, to form a dialogue between layers of drawing, some gestural, some decorative, and some recreating accidental stains; an orchestrating of visual reference, an accumulation of skins.”
Polonski adds: “I have looked at cloth as a document that can hold the narrative of a body; a document that can be read as a map of physical occupation, human experience, and personal history.
“Drawing is a mode of exploration for which I use many visual sources, including life observation, memory and found imagery, historical artworks, and my own concurrent work in paint/print.”
Julia Polonski was born in Leicester in 1957. She gained her BA (Hons) in Graphic Design at Brighton Polytechnic (now the University of Brighton) in 1979 and an MA in Fine Art: Drawing at Wimbledon School of Art, London in 2003, winning the Postgraduate Drawing Prize the same year.
In 2007, Polonski was the invited artist for ‘Art in Action’ at Waterpenny, Oxford, winning the ‘Drawing Section’ Prize, and in 2009, was the recipient of the Research and Development Award, Arts Council England.
The Atrium Gallery is open Monday - Saturday, 9am - 6pm and admission is free.
Polonski also has work on show in the new Art Loan Collection in BU’s Poole House foyer, Talbot Campus. Free catalogues of the collection can be collected from the Atrium Gallery.
