BU’s midwifery unit at St Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth, is holding an open day for aspiring midwives on Wednesday 13 May. |
Would-be midwives can find out more about the profession and the courses on offer at an open day being held by BU’s School of Health & Social Care midwifery unit at St Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth, on Wednesday 13 May.
Local residents will get the chance to talk to midwives, academics and current and former students about the courses available, entry requirements and what midwifery can provide in terms of pay, benefits and career progression.
BU’s Paul Lewis, Associate Dean for Midwifery, Rehabilitation and Health Sciences, said: “The role of a midwife goes much further than delivering babies. Midwives also provide support to women, babies, partners and families from conception right through to post-natal care. It can be hard work but it is very rewarding.
“BU has held a contract to deliver the programme in the South Central Strategic Health Authority since 1998 and continues to offer a well-balanced mix of theory and practice, giving students the opportunity to gain experience in the community and in a hospital setting in Portsmouth, Basingstoke, Yeovil or the Isle of Wight. Programmes are available from September 2009, January 2010 and beyond.”
BU leads the way in offering all second-year midwifery students the chance to get to grips with caseloading. Under the supervision of experienced midwives, students provide support to a small number of pregnant women, provide them with antenatal care, attend their labours, and offer further advice and guidance when the baby is born.
In addition, students learn from academics who have been recognised for their world-leading research in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
The open day starts at 1.30pm at St Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth, PO3 6AD. To register your interest please contact the askBU enquiry service on 08456 501501(BU does not profit from this service) or follow the link below.
