Several students on computer animation courses have had their coursework submitted for international competitions.

Four films from the National Centre of Computer Animation (NCCA) at Bournemouth University are nominated for the Animex International Film Festival’s Audience Award.

One of the films – 'Theros' - comes from Bournemouth’s BA (Hons) Computer Visualisation and Animation course, while another three - 'The Hatters Teaparty', 'Brush' and 'Glitch' - were chosen from the MA 3D Computer Animation course.

In addition to this, 'Brush' by Lei Chen has been selected for the Young Animation award at the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film, a huge industry event held from April 27th – May 2nd. The Festival is one of the largest events for animated film in Europe.

Animation completed during courses at Bournemouth often gets nominated for awards. This adds extra credibility to graduates' CVs, as well as enhancing the NCCA's good reputation amongst the animation industry.

Voting for the awards takes place online, at the Animex Website. Voting closes July 1st 2006.

"We run a pretty successful course; we usually send a lot of work off for competitions. Most of our work we send to the Southampton Big Screen Festival, and also abroad," said Ari Sarafopolous, lecturer on BA (Hons) Computer Visualisation and Animation. Bournemouth won first prize at last year's Big Screen Festival, with an animation by graduate Damian Hook.

Georg Finch, from MA 3D Computer Animation agreed: "It's their standard project work and if we think it's to a particularly high standard we'll definitely submit it to international competitions." He added that students were usually delighted to have their work showcased at the highest level.

Mr Sarafopolous: "It shows the quality of the student work - quality at the international and national level, and it's good promotion for the student themselves. Another very big conference we attend regularly is the Annual SIGGRAPH Conference. It's probably the biggest and most prestigious conference in computer animation and last year we had 4 student presentations there; 3 animations and one student paper were presented from BA level."
