The Media School continues its association with the Purbeck Film Festival by hosting a Festival Screen on Talbot Campus for the last two weeks of October.

The theme of the 2006 Purbeck Film Festival at the University is global, with a focus on international cinema, celebrating the variety and richness of different national cinemas. Movies from India, Korea, Poland, China, Russia, France, Africa and Latin America will be featured.

The aim of the season is to provide an alternative film experience to that normally available in mainstream cinemas and to celebrate the diversity of cultures witnessed through movies. Some screenings will provide audiences with the opportunity to sample the food of the country whose cinema is featured – the screening of Shekhar Kapur's "Bandit Queen! will be accompanied by a selection of Indian food prepared by the University's International Students.

Several movies in the line-up will be controversial:

"Shooting Dogs", staring John Hurt, is the latest cinematic account of the brutal 1994 genocide in Rwanda where over a million people died.

"Control Room" is a provocative documentary about the Arab satellite television news network Al-Jazeera and its contentious coverage of the 2003 Iraqi war – the screening will be introduced by guest speakers and there will be a discussion about the issues raised in the film afterwards.

"Rollin' with the Nines" is a raw controversial recent UK film about gun crime, and will be introduced by members of the production team, with a Q&A afterwards.

A Student Gala will be featured on the final Saturday of the season where student work will be presented in screenings and rehearsed script readings, followed by a party to celebrate the end of the Festival.
