Dr Tom Watson, Reader in Communications in The Media School, will be leading the judging panel for the 2007 AMEC Communication Effectiveness Awards. He is an internationally-recognised expert in the measurement and evaluation of communications programmes.

“The awards draw entries from UK and international organisations. They show the best practice in the use of research to judge how effective public relations and marketing communication programmes have been in delivering results,” he said.

“These are the biggest awards of their type on this side of the Atlantic and the winners will be announced at a prestigious event organised by the Association for the Measurement and Evaluation of Communication (AMEC) at the Cumberland Hotel in London in November.”

Dr Watson is also the author of a highly-regarded book on the evaluation of PR programmes, which was written in conjunction with Paul Noble, a former academic at The Media School. The book, which has been published in English, Korean, Japanese and Russian, has just been revised for a second edition due later in the year.

“My selection as chairman of the judging panel indicates the high standing that Bournemouth University’s Media School has with the public relations and corporate communications sector.”

“The measurement of communication programmes is increasingly important as these activities become more highly targeted. With greater use of online communications, the task of evaluating effectiveness is becoming more complex,” he added.

Dr Watson will be undertaking an international study into PR evaluation practice in mid-year, with the results to be announced at conferences in the US and UK in the autumn.
