A team of four BU final year Advertising students have won the Europe-wide competition run by the European Association of Communications Agencies (EACA). |
On 25 May 2012 a team of four final-year students from Bournemouth University won the Ad Venture student completion and the chance to spend a week on the student programme of the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
Sean Bone, Art Director of the winning Brutha team said: “We always said we would be happy if we got as far as the top 10, so winning 1st place at the finals was an amazing achievement. What we’re all really excited about now is going to the Cannes Lions Festival. I can’t think of a better prize than rubbing shoulders with some of the top people in the industry... and hopefully blagging our way onto some exclusive yacht parties.” The other team members were Ben Gardiner, Account Manager and Rosa Greenslade and Paul Martin, both Account Planners.
The challenge for this year’s competition was for teams to raise awareness about Online Behavioural Advertising (OBA) and increase transparency of OBA, explain the choices users have and show how users can exercise their choice over OBA. They had to supply a synopsis of the explorative process undertaken, and include relevant supporting elements (e.g visual diary, mock-ups, scamps, scripts, storyboards, etc).
The competition was judged in three rounds. Firstly the students had to send in a proposal online and 10 teams were selected to go through to the next round. Then they had to face a conference call with six judges before being told they had made it through to the final. The final was held at the EDCOM conference in Buckinghamshire on 25 May where they had to present.
Sean Bone said: “Winning AdVenture caps off the end to a very successful year’s work for Brutha. Throughout University I have done many group presentations but have never worked with a team better than with Ben, Paul, and Rosa”. Of their prize of a visit to Cannes he said: “We’re planning on making a Brutha documentary of our time there so keep an eye out for that! It will be sad once it all comes to an end, but everyone will be starting work soon. We’ll always remember and miss our time working at Brutha.”
Dr Richard Scullion, Senior Lecturer in Marketing and Communications from Bournemouth University, said: “It has been a great contribution over the last four years to our degree to be involved in Ad Venture. The success of our team Brutha this year is testimony to their commitment, enthusiasm and creativity and as tutors it helps validate our efforts.”
