A joint meeting organised by the Prehistoric Society and Bournemouth University Archaeology and Historic Environment Group
For more than a decade landscape theory has been brought to bear on the study of prehistoric communities across many parts of northwest Europe with interesting results. It is now clear that many of today’s most cherished areas of scenic countryside and coast were far from quiet in the ancient past. The aim of this meeting is to explore the results of landscape studies in terms of what we have learnt about prehistoric peoples and the worlds they created, their relationships to the natural world, the role of monuments and material culture, and the experiences people had whilst living in these lands.

Sunday 22nd April
Optional minibus tour of prehistoric sites of south Dorset, including the Kingston Russell stone circle, the Grey Mare and Her Colts, and the barrow complex of Bronkham Hill. Lunch stop in Dorchester. Level walking of c. 4 miles total through the day. Leave Bournemouth University at 9.30 am, return by 3.00 pm. Places limited.
