BU is delighted to announce that Dr Dave Alred will be joining the Sport Academic Group on a part time basis.

Dave, who holds a PhD from Loughborough University, is best known for his work with rugby union and is regarded as the world’s best kicking coach who leads the field in approaches to skills acquisition and mental preparation.

He has been Jonny Wilkinson’s kicking coach since the player was 15 and continues to work with him today. Dave has also been an England assistant coach for over 106 tests from 1995 to 2006 and a British Lions assistant for three tours.

A keen rugby union and league player and talented kicker himself, Dave spent some time in America playing American football for the Minnesota Vikings, before returning to England to coach Bath RFC, Australia RFU and England RFU.

Dave is currently the performance coach to the golfer Luke Donald, who he has helped become the World Number One.

Some of Dave’s other achievements include his inauguration into the UK Coaching Hall of Fame and in 2003. He was also awarded the Mussabini Medal for outstanding success on the world stage. His success did not stop there and in 2004, he was honoured with an MBE.

Dr Ian Jones, the Associate Dean for Sport at BU, said of Dave’s appointment “It’s a fantastic opportunity for us, and we are very grateful for Dave agreeing to come on board to help develop the team.’
