Roisin ORorke

Student’s award nomination

A Bournemouth University sports student is one of three candidates to be shortlisted for a prestigious national coaching award.

Final year student Roisin O'Rorke, who is studying Sports Development and Coaching Sciences in the School of Tourism, is in the running for the Young Coach of the Year award in this year's UK Coaching Awards.

The awards, which are run by Sports Coach UK, honour coaches and coaching organisations that have achieved outstanding success over the previous 12 months.

Alongside her studies Roisin works for a company called Training Dayz, teaching several different sports in various schools across the Bournemouth area. She also works for Helen Troke Badminton Academy, which runs training sessions across Dorset, where she teaches badminton to all ages and abilities.

Roisin, who is also Captain of BU's ladies badminton team, said: "I'm delighted to be nominated and thrilled when I received the letter saying I had been shortlisted to the top three in the country. It means a lot to be recognised for the coaching I have done and it has given me a real sense of achievement."

"I'm loving my time at BU and I'm really enjoying my course. My lecturers have been incredibly valuable to me both academically and with my ability to improve as a coach.

"Studying Sports Development and Coaching Sciences has enabled me to obtain a variety of qualifications and win awards which have enhanced my coaching skills. The course also provided me with the opportunity to complete a work placement year which was a really beneficial learning experience and enabled me to excel as a coach."

Roisin was nominated by tutor Keith Parry, who is Programme Leader for Sports Coaching and Development in the School.

Keith said: "I'm delighted to hear that Roisin has been shortlisted as one of three candidates for the Young Coach of the Year award – it is an outstanding achievement. I nominated Roisin in recognition of her commitment to coaching and her qualities as a coach."

The results of the 2010 UK Coaching Awards will be announced on Tuesday 30 November at The Brewery in the City of London.
