BU expands tourism Professorship

BU Professors Alan Fyall and Dimitrios Buhalis

BU’s has expanded its high-calibre tourism expertise with two new Professorial appointments

BU’s School of Services Management, an international leader in tourism research and education, has awarded new Professorial appointments to tourism experts Alan Fyall and Dimitrios Buhalis.

Fyall was appointed to BU Professor following his significant contribution to Tourism and Leisure management and his extensive experience in publishing and contract research, including activities undertaken in many countries around the world.

The appointment recognises his commitment to the professional development of the broader tourism industry and further cementing BU’s reputation as one of the leading universities in the world for tourism.

In 2009 Professor Fyall was one of three leading academics who launched the country's first professional qualification in destination management in association with the Tourism Management Institute and colleagues from Leeds Metropolitan and Lancaster universities.

He was recently elected as Vice Chair for the Thriving Economy Group for Bournemouth 2026 – a partnership that aims to improve the lives of people who live, work and visit the town – and is currently Head of BU’s Enterprise function.

Commenting in his Professorial appointment Fyall said: “I am delighted with this promotion which recognises and rewards my contribution over a number of years in the field of destination management and marketing.

“My promotion is particularly timely as it reflects the growing volume and maturity of work in the field as does it dovetail neatly with the increasing recognition among practitioners of the need to  enhance the level of professionalism in the management and marketing of destinations both in the UK and overseas. “

In the same round of Professorial appointments, BU Professor Dimitrios Buhalis, leading e-Tourism academic and Deputy Director of the University’s International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research, has been promoted to the higher level Professor 2 status.

Professor Buhalis has carried out extensive research into the impact of ICT on tourism organisations and is currently leading BU’s eTourism research introducing technology in all aspects of tourism research and education.

He will now be responsible for offering outstanding academic leadership in tourism research and promoting the strategic themes and corporate values of the University at an International level.

Professor Dimitrios Buhalis said: “I am delighted with this promotion which rewards the innovative work my team has been doing over the years on eTourism and the impact that has on both tourism organisations and education globally.

“Technology is penetrating every single business function and changes radically the way we live, altering tourism dramatically. It will bring great opportunities to BU through the new Cross Theme activity on Creative and Digital Economy and will enable us to take our multidisciplinary research forward.”
