Shakespear’s drive brings home medals

Consistency is the key as BU golfer brings home two medals from world golf event.

BU golfer Andy Shakespear has returned from this year’s World University Golf Championships with two bronze medals.

The 21-year-old student, placed third individually in the event, played on the Gary Player course in Sun City, South Africa. Andy was also part of the bronze-winning GB team.

“Consistency was the key to my success in South Africa,” said Andy, who carded a four-round total of 294. “I drove really well all week and my short game got better as the tournament progressed, which was vital on the fast and sloping greens we encountered.

“I didn’t feel any pressure at the start of the event,” he continued, “I was quite relaxed and got a good start which boosted my confidence, but I started to feel it a bit on the last day as the competition picked up.”

Andy, originally from Hatfield Peverel in Essex, is preparing for the second year of his Foundation course in Coach and Athlete Development.

Earlier in the summer, he was a member of the England team that triumphed over Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to take the British Universities Home International title.

In April he finished 11th at the British Universities Strokeplay Final. He was also a key member of the successful BU men’s first team that claimed the British Universities Premier South league title for 2007/08.

Joining Andy in South Africa were Paul Betty and David Booth of Stirling University and Adam Best of Teeside.
