BU student scoops Citizens Award

A BU Law Student has won the Citizens Advice Student of the Year Award.

One of our LLB Law students, Lucy Oliver, has won the Gale Student of the Year Award, awarded by the Bournemouth branch of Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

Lucy, currently in the second year of her degree, was presented the award by Matthew Moore of Gales Solicitors at the Bureaus recent AGM, held at our Talbot Campus. The award recognises Lucys commitment to the voluntary organisation and her legal studies.

Another BU student, Louise Capaldi-Tallon, was also shortlisted for the award for her involvement in shaping policy on child poverty, as Social Policy Coordinator. In a passionate speech during the AGM, entitled 'Would you have a Student in your Bureau?' she discussed the challenges of working on placement at the CAB in a challenging, thought-provoking presentation.

The event was attended by local solicitors, BU staff and students and CAB employees. Martin Broad, the Bureaus Chief Executive said: "Citizens Advice Bournemouth is very proud to have a strong link with the University and we value the many law students who come to us for placements and to volunteer."

Commenting upon her award Lucy Oliver said: "Winning the award was a big complement and a complete surprise. I found working at Bournemouth CAB gave me a great insight and I have learnt so much from my placement. I would recommend any law student to work there."

BU works closely with the CAB and its LLB Law students from the Business School take part in work placements each year at the Bournemouth branch. In addition to their official placement, many students over the years have volunteered their services to gain invaluable experience and contacts.
