Graduate’s invention takes to the water

A new video camera designed for water sports activity is about to be launched, with the help of an outstanding BU graduate.

BU Product Design graduate Luke Wilcox has designed a camera mount to help windsurfers and sailors capture their classic moments and memories as they ride the ocean wave.

Luke joined forces with Dorset-based Predator Technology, a leading brand in the world of portable digital video, during the final year of his BSc Design degree.

The company set Luke a project to design a mount for their latest top of the range wearable, waterproof camera, the VX-360. They’ve been so impressed with his solution to their product requirement that a license deal has been agreed and a patent application filed for his invention.

Luke’s mount is highly innovative in that it enables the new camera to be attached to the mast of a sailing dinghy or windsurfing rig, meaning that you can record your own video footage from the best viewpoint.

Jon Porter, Sales & Marketing Director of Predator Technology said: “We developed a business relationship with BU in order to tap into the creative talents of young design engineers. We’re delighted with the results of Luke’s work which was perfectly in line with our brief and have signed an exclusive agreement with him.”

Luke Wilcox said: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Predator and the Commercialisation department at BU. The knowledge and experience I’ve gained from this has been invaluable in developing my skills as a product designer.”

This successful partnership seals the start of a strong relationship with Predator, who has commenced two further projects with BU design students following the success of their relationship with Luke.
