Lord Sainsbury, Minister for Science and Innovation, has appointed Bournemouth University Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Curran to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

Professor Curran will be the first Vice-Chancellor from a post-92 University to be appointed to a UK Research Council and will be one of only five V-Cs who currently hold such a position on the country's eight Research Councils.

A former NASA research scientist and current advisor to the European Space Agency, Professor Curran's award-winning work in Earth Observation, involving the use of satellite sensors to monitor the environment at local to global scales, is widely published and he is the youngest recipient of the Remote Sensing Society's Gold Medal.

?Science policy in general and environmental understanding in particular are of great importance to the UK ,? said Professor Paul Curran. ?I'm delighted to have been invited to contribute to the debate as a member of NERC's Council.?

NERC delivers independent research, survey, education and knowledge transfer in the environmental sciences, in order to advance knowledge of planet Earth as a complex, interacting system. NERC's remit covers the full range of atmospheric, Earth, biological, terrestrial and aquatic sciences, from the deep oceans to the upper atmosphere and from the poles to the equator.
