'Leet' Scoops Elite Prize for Journalism Student Dominic Sacco celebrates his award |
BA (Hons) Multi-Media Journalism student Dominic Sacco is celebrating after scooping a major prize for devising and designing an innovative new publication.
The 21-year-old from Billericay in Essex won the Periodicals Training Council's (PTC) Magazine Academy award for 'New Magazine Concept' with Leet, his idea for the UK's only publication dedicated to on-line gaming.
PTC judges, including Nick Brett, Deputy Managing Director and Editorial Director of BBC Magazines, were particularly impressed that Dominic had succeeded in finding a "rare, real gap in the market". The idea originally grew from an assignment Dominic completed as part of his coursework.
Dominic explained that the title Leet is a slang word that describes something considered to be 'elite'. His own interest in on-line gaming fuelled his interest in creating a title that would be 'elite' in terms of its appeal to others in a format that features constantly updated news and reviews on everything to do with on-line gaming.
Dominic, who is entering the final year of his BA (Hons) in Multi-Media Journalism at Bournemouth, gained some insight into games magazines during a placement with Games TM magazine which led to some freelance work.
BA (Hons) in Multi-Media Journalism is accredited by the Periodical Training Council, the Broadcast Journalism Training Council and the National Council for the Training of Journalists – the first journalism course in the country to achieve this status.
