The Ecology and Management of Deer in Wooded Landscapes One Day Workshop
The Deer Initiative & British Ecological Society BU & The National Trust

One day workshop 20th May 2009

This event has now passed

Much progress has been made on identifying how wild deer impact on the establishment and growth of woodland communities. However, woodlands are invariably located within a mosaic of other habitats so an important new step is to consider deer management at the landscape scale.

This workshop aims to strengthen links between researchers and practitioners interested in the following themes:

  • Effect of landscape structure on deer distribution and their impacts on woods and other habitats
  • Methods for management and restoration of woods experiencing high densities of deer
  • Challenges and opportunities of establishing deer management regimes at a landscape scale

In the morning delegates will hear a series of short presentations on the above themes.

Then there will be field visits to woodlands owned and managed by the National Trust to explore deer management issues and the effect of surrounding land use.

Finally we will re-convene for a discussion session aimed at developing new collaborative approaches. Participants are expected to include representatives from the National Trust, the Deer Initiative, the RSPB, Natural England, Poole Basin Deer Management Group, the Forestry Commission, Defence Deer Management (MoD) local wildlife trusts and local councils as well as research scientists.
